Behind-the-scenes with Brittany Johnson, Mama & Postpartum Educator

Postpartum was harder than I expected. Here’s why I wish I’d prepared differently

As an inexperienced first-time mom, I thought birth was going to be intense.

But interestingly, it wasn’t my birth that caught me off guard (although it did come with hiccups).

It was everything that came afterward in my postpartum transition.

I still remember the fog of those early days. The way every little task—sitting up after a cesarean, breast pumping, even taking the time to shower—felt like a big deal.

My body was sore, my emotions were raw, and I wasn’t sure what was normal or what needed attention.

I wanted to feel a deeper connection to my baby — and yet I felt like I was barely hanging on.

Nobody told me how to have an easier postpartum experience in advance.

Alongside healing from my cesarean…

Nobody warned me that I might cry for no reason—or that I’d be upset with my husband over inconsequential things.

Nobody told me how much mental energy it would take just to plan meals with a newborn—let alone prepare them.

No one told me that life wouldn’t return to “business as usual,” and that I’d need to set more gentle expectations on myself and what I could accomplish in those early days and weeks.

I began to wonder, “Is this normal?” This isn’t how I thought it would be.

Most of the advice I found was vague or over-simplified. “Rest when the baby rests” doesn’t mean much when you’re stressed, unprepared, and having an identity crisis.

What I learned along the way, without much preparation, was that the postpartum experience:

  • Doesn’t always look like sunshine and matching outfits.

  • Oftentimes, it’s messy and sensitive.

  • Sleep deprivation affects everything—mood, memory, milk, and marriage.

  • Visitors can either help or hurt, depending on the boundaries you’ve set.

  • Identity shifts are real—and they can leave you feeling like a stranger in your own skin.

Thankfully, here’s what can make a real difference for your postpartum recovery.

The good news is: It’s also possible to reduce those effects by preparing for your postpartum recovery in advance.

Your story doesn’t have to be like mine — you can have a postpartum experience with less stress and more joy.

I’m not talking about perfection.

I’m talking about intentional prep—the kind that gives you clarity, tools, and breathing room for those early days, like:

  • Knowing how to manage soreness and movement

  • Planning support for meals, rest, and feeding

  • How to prioritize sleep when there’s a million other things to do

Because when you’re prepared, you don’t have to guess. You don’t have to scramble. And you’re way more likely to actually rest and heal the way your body needs to.

That’s why I created the Easier Postpartum Recovery Guide for mamas.

It’s everything I wish I’d had (and known)—and everything I now make sure every mama I support knows before birth.

Whether you’re a first-time mom or just hoping for a smoother recovery this time around, this guide is here to walk you through the layers of postpartum recovery—step by step.

From re-nourishing your body to learning how to examine and set gentle expectations on yourself (and your partner) , it’s not just a list of resources or vague encouragement. It’s a clear, compassionate plan that zooms out, allowing you to see and prepare your mind and body from multiple angles.
